The 2017 winners for the Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Literacy Awards will receive their awards at a ceremony at the Crowne Plaza -Lord Beaverbrook Hotel Fredericton at 7 p.m. on June 25. A reception will take place immediately beforehand starting at 6:00 pm.
Awarded annually since 1998 by Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, former New Brunswick lieutenant-governor and senator and now past president of the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick (LCNB), these awards recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of literacy and essential skills. They are supported by funds generated by the Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) Golf Tournament for Literacy.
The 2017 PGI Literacy Dinner and Auction was another example of the good that can be achieved when a fantastic community comes together for a good cause. Below are some wonderful photos which truly capture the happiness we here at LCNB felt by having the opportunity to spend the night with so many great people! Thank you to everyone who makes this wonderful annual event possible!

The province’s strategy follows the release of last year’s report by New Brunswick Literacy Secretariat co-chairs Marilyn Trenholme Counsell and Liane Roy. The recommendations included: speech support for children, encouraging parents to sing, talk and read to their children under five, and providing better support of community-based learning for adult literacy. Her report also suggested that libraries appoint community literacy coordinators.
Some of the key priorities in the strategy, according to a release, include:
- Providing a single point of access for parents to maximize their child’s or children’s development
- Providing individual-based programs and services as well as intervention for children
- Discovering ways to provide learning opportunities outside the “traditional school day”
- Working with employers to address literacy needs for the labour market
- Support for adult learners that “advances them” towards their goals and potential employment

On April 25, supporters of literacy will gather in Fredericton to celebrate the Honourable Margaret Norrie McCain, our 2017 literacy champion.
The Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) events for literacy are major fundraising events held in every province and territory.
The Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick has raised more than $1.6 million dollars for literacy since our inaugural PGI event 15 years ago. Funds raised go directly to youth, adult and family literacy programs around the province, including support for our schools, libraries and community groups.
Join us as we present Mrs. McCain with the Champion of Literacy Award and celebrate the many ways in which she is working to provide opportunities for all of Canada’s children and families to have early access to the education and supports necessary to create a pluralistic and prosperous society for us all.
Event tickets are $150 individually, or $1,200 for a table of eight. Purchase yours now by contacting our executive director Christy McLean at 506-457-1227, or e-mail Christy at lcnb@nbliteracy.ca with the subject line “Ticket Request – PGI Dinner”
